I was just on another contractor's job site. He's framing a two story residential addition supported on a concrete stem wall/ crawl space that's resting on ledge.
What was interesting is that although the plans called for 8" walls, the concrete guy subtracted 4" at the top for a for a floor joist shelf. This left 4" at the top

Seismic LVL
Most of us have seen plenty of plywood shear walls.
On a recent job I got to install some LVLs as shear anchors/collectors instead of the usual plywood.
The hillside house had a stepped foundation which allowed the floor diaphragm to be anchored to the footing in a horizontal fashion (rather than from top plate to bottom plate via ply).
