This separate “his” bathroom, part of a more extensive master suite remodel, included renovating an outdated layout and updating the original rustic 1960’s style with a high-end traditional design.
John Newmyer, owner of Newmyer Distinctive Remodeling, in Walled Lake, Mich., specified this built-in 6-foot storage bench near the shower in the 200-square-foot bathroom. The bench was built by the same custom manufacturer as the vanity and features the same maple wood construction; the cushion was crafted by the client. Storage behind doors at either end of the bench conceals toiletries, while open shelving in the center holds towels.
In some bathrooms, homeowners will use the tub deck for seating, but Newmyer thinks benches are a comfort and convenience that more homeowners should consider. He talks to all his clients about incorporating universal design elements such as open showers, shower seating, and grab bars into their projects.
