An “elegant, contemporary solution to a common problem” is how the judges described this kitchen. The family wanted a new kitchen, but they did not want to expand into the backyard pool and patio area. They were, however, willing to sacrifice the existing breakfast nook to gain space for more cabinetry and a peninsula.
The kitchen has a comfortable work triangle for users and also has an inviting flow for family and guests. The materials are simple, every detail well thought-out, and the colors mesh, according to the judges. The designer speced natural maple cabinetry, earth-toned granite countertops, and limestone floors and backsplash.
Curves throughout the room — on the edge of the peninsula and detail of the granite, in the pendant track light, and on modern bar seats — soften the straight lines of the kitchen. Complementary maple cabinets in the adjoining family room tie the two rooms together. The designer also raised the ceiling height from 8 to 9 feet for a more airy feel.
