A new book on concrete countertops offers step-by-step directions on designing, building molds, mixing, coloring, and pouring these popular surfaces. Concrete Countertops: Designs, Forms, and Finishes for the New Kitchen and Bath, by Fu-Tung Cheng with Eric Olsen, takes readers through an actual project from start to finish, with photos and sketches of every process. Each chapter includes boxes with tips and warnings. Using the basic top as a stepping-stone, the writers also explain and show the different variations.
Additional appendices show advanced details such as curves, a drop-down front edge, and pouring concrete on site. The end of the book lists resources for supplies, mixers, sealers, pigments and stains, adhesives, molds, fasteners, appliances, organizations, and books. Author Fu-Tung Cheng of Cheng Design in Berkeley, Calif., specializes in interior and exterior design and construction. His company has a separate products division that distributes a line of concrete countertops and high-end stainless steel kitchen hoods.
