Whirlpool Corporation has recalled approximately 26,300 glass cooktop surfaces due to burn and fire hazards, according to an announcement by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).

The recall involves Whirlpool, KitchenAid, and JennAir brand glass cooktops with touch controls. The brand name is printed on the cooktop and model numbers and serial numbers are printed on the underside of the cooktop. The affected products include radiant KitchenAid cooktops, radiant Whirlpool cooktops, and downdraft radiant JennAir cooktops. The CPSC provides a full list of the model numbers of the recalled products.

The recalled cooktop surface elements can turn on by themselves, posing burn and fire hazards to homeowners, according to the CPSC. Whirlpool has received 133 reports reports of incidents involving the cooktop surfaces turning on by themselves. As a result, the manufacturer has received 14 reports of heat damage to nearby items in the kitchen and four reports of items catching on fire, including one report of property damage. The product malfunction has also resulted in two cases of minor burn injuries, according to the CPSC.

Lowe's, The Home Depot, Best Buy, and other home improvement and home appliance stores sold the cooktop elements in stores and online between March 2017 and August 2019. The CPSC says consumers should contact Whirlpool immediately to arrange for a free installation of a replacement cooktop.
