Installing the steel brackets requires cutting a hole in the roof sheathing so they can be attached directly to the top plate of the exterior wall. A standard roof jack then seals the opening, just like flashing around a plumbing stack.
Unlike a patio or deck roof that’s anchored to the house roof or exterior wall, an elevated roof can carry a generous pitch without reducing headroom at the far edge of the patio. The space between the house roof and patio roof also encourages air circulation and releases heat that would otherwise be trapped.
