Something was missing. The owners of this Reading, Mass., house needed a focal point for family gatherings and social functions, but the empty expanse from their home's back door to the new tennis court left them uninspired. Archiect Joseph Luna's solution? A meticulouslty detailed, four-season garden room with expanded terraces and decks.
The 426-square-foot addition not only provides the owners with a place for summer gatherings and quiet winter mornings but also adds a point of interest and comlpexity to an otherwise staid rear facade.
Luna placed the garden room on axis with the existing breakfast area and lowered its floor to emphasize both the garden room's separateness from the original structure and the perpendicular cross gables of the room's squared cathedral ceiling. The way the addition blends styles from the original structure while remaining unique has a dramatic impact on both interior and exterior space.
The floor plan creates a new interior hub and three exceptional outdoor spaces. Tucked under the cross gable, a large bay window overlooks mahogany decks and bluestone terraces, which extend to the tennis court, joining the once disparate elements into a pleasant outdoor area.
