Not all old wall studs deserve to be thrown away during a remodeling project. When rehabbing her 100-year-old house in Venice Beach, Calif., architect Isabelle Duvivier tore out a wall and discovered a set of fir 2x4s, all of them uniform, solid, and straight. Building codes forbid repurposing the wood for anything structural, so instead Duvivier used them to create a set of stair treads and bookshelves. Read more
