Solutions
To bring a more contemporary feel to their home, the owners of this 1967 midcentury modern wanted an extensive remodel. The anchor of the renovation was creating a new family room from a covered outdoor area and removing walls and reorienting the original kitchen to create a great room with abundant light and a strong connection to the outdoors.
The new 888-square-foot great room delivers, with clerestory windows set above full-height glass doors that open to a pool and deck area for easy entertaining.
Architect David Montalba overhauled the original galley kitchen to create a new space with two islands, each with abundant drawer storage and one with a seating area. The islands are flanked on three sides by appliances and storage.
A casual dining area separates the kitchen from the adjacent family room, but the concrete floor and matching walnut cabinetry maintain the visual connection. Restructuring the roof allowed for a higher kitchen ceiling, now fitted with a large skylight.
