Charged with creating a boutique lounge from a 100-year-old brick building in midtown St. Louis, designers Tom Niemeier and Tom Young updated the exterior of the existing 5,156-square-foot building with a steel awning/sign and a matching steel paneled box on the side of the building that wraps around the egress staircase.

The box juts out into the existing side lot, which is now a patio. “The adoption of an old warehouse into something beyond, with simple materials, makes it successful,” said one judge.

The well-placed exterior and interior lighting creates the perfect ambiance for a lounge. The floating boxes that hold the liquor above the first floor bar are illuminated by a line of indirect LED lights, while the draped frosted acrylic panels hovering above the second floor bar add a touch of drama to the space. “Wherever the [designers] created a detail, it’s done well,” one judge said.
