When state authorities fined Terry's Quality Service, Spokane, Wash., $250 for safety violations on a roof installation, company owner Terry Henderson knew it was time to act. “It was a first time offense, but I knew next time they would not be so lenient,” he says.

After spending two frustrating years of trying to develop a safety manual on his own, Henderson turned to Safety Services, Corona, Calif., to create a 160-page manual that covers all aspects of remodeling and includes both OSHA and state codes. He also subscribed to the consulting company's tail-gate program, which allows him to choose monthly safety education from 250 topics.

Henderson's lead carpenter is in charge of educating employees and subs with the topic outlines. “In our state, if a subcontractor does not have their own safety program, they fall under ours,” he says.

Henderson says his company is safer because of the information and updates provided by Safety Services. “They are a great service,” he says. “I am impressed.”

Safety Services developed the tailgate program specifically to meet the needs of small contractors. “Whatever they need safety-wise, we'll help them. If it is not in our area of expertise, we'll find someone who is a qualified and reputable trainer,” says marketing director John Shelman.
