While bathrooms are most likely to remain the same size, certain changes will be more popular than others. Remodeling trends for 2015 include larger showers, more accessibility features, and double sinks, according to a Houzz survey released today.
Look for showers to get bigger this year. About 84% of respondents are upgrading their master bathroom showers. The Northeast is leading the trend, with 67% increasing shower size in master bathrooms. In the West, 40% of full baths are getting bigger shower stalls.
Larger shower stalls may be reflecting the baby boomer trend
of adding accessibility features to age in place. Popular features among
boomers are grab bars and curbless shower entry. They are three times more
likely to install grab bars than younger generations and twice as likely to
have a curbless shower. Other features such as shower seats, handheld shower
heads, and non-slip floors are more universal, with younger generations adding
them as well.
Double sinks are more popular in master bathrooms this year,
up 10% from last year’s survey. Popularity varies among region, more
Southerners and Westerners install double sinks than people in the Midwest or
Northeast. About 3% of Southerners will go a step further, putting three sinks
in their master bath.
Half of homeowners surveyed across all regions of the U.S. plan to budget over $10,000 for master bath upgrades. They’re also more inclined to spend money on professional construction services verses design services, 69% of respondents said they would hire a construction pro for a master bath upgrade compared with 29% who would hire a design pro. These stats aren’t surprising since bathroom remodels are considered a lasting investment, with the majority, 46% for master baths and 39% for full baths, being upgraded every 16 to 30 years.
These numbers are based on an online survey conducted in February of 3,189 homeowners registered as Houzz users in the U.S. The homeowners who were surveyed finished a bathroom project in the past 12 months, are in the process of one, or plan to start one in the next three months.
