Originally designed to remove glazing putty and lead paint from old windows, the Silent Paint Remover is an effective tool in RRP projects. Unlike a heat gun, the tool uses infrared to heat from the inside out, leaving an open grain and contributing to a removal method that will pass a lead test. The maker says the operating temperature of 550 degrees F heats the painted surface to about 350 degrees F — well below the safe temperature for removing lead paint. TIP: Soren Eriksson of Viking Sales says that applying a coat of organic raw linseed oil to very old paint will facilitate paint removal after heating. He adds that using organic linseed oil is key; regular linseed oil from a paint store is a chemical and will mostly evaporate.
