Q: I'm trying to achieve work/life balance through delegation, but every time I let go, something goes awry. What am I doing wrong?

A: Do Before “letting go” ask yourself: the people I'm delegating to have the information they need to make good decisions? Do they have the experience or training necessary? Only delegate to those who are qualified. In addition, follow these guidelines.

  • You retain the responsibility for what you delegate. A delegated project that isn't done on time ultimately is your responsibility.
  • Make sure the people you delegate to clearly understand what is expected. Be prepared for questions.
  • Halfway between when you delegate and the completion date, check the progress.
  • Remain accessible. If you don't, you haven't delegated anything —you've dumped it.
  • Acknowledge a job well done.
