Festool recently released the Domino XL, a larger version of its original Domino joining system. The basics remain the same: A plunging spiral cutter hogs out a mortise that neatly fits a Domino tenon, making for a solid connection between two pieces of wood. The XL is capable of seating Dominos up to 5½ inches long — an ideal size for joining doors, gates, and large slabs of wood. A series of retractable pins allows for accurate and consistent placement of mortises, and the fence can be adjusted to cut at an angle. There is also a setting for creating slightly oversize mortises so that there's some play during glue-up.
