Science has shown that the human eye is three to four times more sensitive to the green portion of the spectrum than it is to the red, which is why some layout lasers have green beams. Green beams are brighter and easier to see at long range and under strong interior lighting. The L2G+ self-leveling cross-line laser uses a direct emitting green diode to project green beams that are sharp, bright, and speckle-free—and visible from up to 100 feet away. Capable of projecting plumb and level lines, it’s intended to be used indoors to create plumb, level, and square layout.
Historically, green beams have been rare in small lasers because the diodes they used were difficult and expensive to produce, and not very reliable. But a technical breakthrough a couple years back made it possible to fabricate reliable true green semiconductor diodes, which are brighter and use less power than the diodes in earlier green beam lasers (red diodes with a crystal overlay to change the color). The L2G+ can power both beams for 7 hours on four AA batteries.
It has a horizontal fan angle of 180 degrees and is accurate to +/- 1/16 inch at 16 feet. The tool is made in China and sells for $549 in a kit that includes a laser, case, wall bracket, pouch, target, and batteries. An upgraded version, the L2G+ Pro Kit, includes laser, tripod, rechargeable NiMH batteries, charger, green target plate, wall bracket, soft pouch, and hard case goes for $689.
