The tool battery powered drip coffee maker (DCM500Z) Makita introduced to other parts of the world last year is now available in the U.S. It’s listed on Amazon as “out of stock”, which for new tools means it has not come in. But it’s on the site so it will no doubt be available in the near future.
The hybrid unit can be powered by an 18-volt Makita Li-Ion battery or a removable cord that plugs into a 120-volt AC receptacle. The DCM500Z contains a permanent (reusable) filter and can brew up to 5 ounces of coffee at a time. Brewing time is 3 minutes per cup on AC and 7 minutes per cup on battery. Runtime is said to be three 5-ounce cups per charge with a 5.0 Ah pack (not included).
I don’t imagine this will be a very big seller, but still, it’s kind of cool. And for the tradesman who enjoys freshly brewed coffee (and the look on his buddies’ faces when they see where he got it) it could become a favorite tool.
It seems only fitting Makita would be the first to do this. After all, several years back they introduced a coffee harvesting machine to those parts of the world where coffee is grown. It consists of a 4-stroke gas brush-cutter with a special “rake” that shakes berries off of the bush. If that sounds strange then consider this: Makita is a big player in outdoor power equipment (OPE) and not all of it is used for landscaping. And besides, if Makita is going to encourage us to drink coffee then the least they can do is help growers produce it.
