S — they’re at the mercy of weather,
interest rates, and suppliers — so it’s not
surprising that they’re often behind the
curve on safety training, even when
they’re convinced that they have everything
under control.
“Most builders care about their workers,
and they think they’re doing a good
job of staying safe, even though most
are not in compliance with the law,”
says Regina McMichael, a Clemson, S.C.,
safety consultant. The OSHA requirement
that employers provide their
workers with safety training is widely
ignored, mostly because builders have
learned that the agency seldom comes
calling on residential job sites unless
someone gets hurt.
