Okay, so we forgot to consult the
directory under “Low-Stress
Occupations” before we decided to
become independent contractors. If we
had, we’d probably have our feet up
behind the security desk at the local
museum of modern art. Instead, we’re
crawling on our bellies, elbow deep in
attic insulation, pulling electrical wire,
or contorting our bodies to fit into a
crawlspace to nail off a neglected joist
hanger with a whopping 4 inches of
hammer swing. And these are the more
manageable aspects of our job.
I recently saw a list ranking career
choices by popularity. It didn’t surprise
me to find “Construction” near the
bottom. Sort of makes you feel like the
last pick for the neighborhood
