According to this summary of the 2016 AIA Home Design Trends Survey provided by the Hanley Wood Data Studio, residential design has changed minimally during the economic recovery, while community design has shifted a lot, moving away from walkable neighborhoods and recreational opportunities toward an increase in tear-downs and more infill development.
Though not much has unchanged with residential design since the last survey, the latest results are interesting for those of us who missed previous versions. Front and side porches continue to be super popular, while interest in single-story homes and simple exterior details is waning. But don’t read that as implying that elaborate traditional detailing is in. Contemporary home designs (presumably elaborate ones) lead the pack in home-style trends.
Low-maintenance materials and lots and lots of windows are up, as well, while trends towards fire-resistant materials , accent lighting and cool roofs are sagging.
