Angie’s List announced today that COO J. Mark Howell has been named the interim CEO of the company while it continues its search for a permanent replacement. This announcement comes more than two months after former CEO and co-founder Bill Oesterle resigned.
"I have decided that now is the right time for me to step down as CEO in order to concentrate more fully on the civic issues that matter most to me," Oesterle said.
Oesterle had been the company’s only CEO since it was founded in 1995. Under Oesterle, Angie’s List went public in 2011 but has experienced an annual net loss every year since 2010. Between 2010 and 2014, the company’s total losses were nearly $174 million. The company also faces new threats in the form of Google and Amazon, which are both entering the home services industry, and has been sharply criticized by remodelers over its policies regarding how it rates them.
Howell has served as the COO of Angie’s List since 2013 and prior to that served as the president of Ingram Micro-Mobility, Americas. He assumes the CEO position with a positive outlook on the state of Angie’s List, saying, in a statement “The company has a loyal, engaged member base, deep service provider relationships and a solid product pipeline. The team is eager to continue to grow our business."
