Whole-House Remodeling

East Meets West

Adding a 1,500-square-foot top story allowed the designers of this lakeside remodel to improve the home's circulation and permit easier access from the garage. The addition also houses a media room and an office.

To incorporate the owner's collection of Asian furniture, designer Scott Hommas introduced what he calls an "Asian-influenced Craftsman style" to an interior that blends redwood, rich stone, and natural fibers. The exterior echoes the theme with wide overhangs, new railings, and a Japanese entry garden.

The judges praised the "fantastic craftsmanship" and noted that the balanced wood detail prevents the interior from feeling heavy.
