Every house needs a little jewelry — a final touch to keep the home looking dressed up. Many new products are offering that little bit of pizzazz by combining traditional materials in new ways.
“Mixing materials is something we're just starting to explore, and we're finding that it adds a very modern touch by being both eclectic and aesthetically pleasing,” says Adrienne Morea, president and creative director of Atlas Homewares. The kitchen-and bath-hardware manufacturer recently introduced its Spa line of knobs and pulls (below right), which feature smooth, colored glass and sleek stainless steel.
By contrast, wood also forms the base — literally — of the new Classic Pedestal from Bear Creek Glass (above left), designed to work with the company's popular vessel sinks. Carved from reclaimed wood recovered from a century-old southern mill, the pedestal offers striking visual contrast to a sparkling glass sink, and lets designers consider new tones and textures for bath décor.
For a little something on the exterior, Westech Building Products has joined glass and vinyl in its Presidio railing system. Tempered glass, which won't weather like polycarbonate, is attached to the vinyl top and bottom rails with traditional window-glazing techniques. Product development manager JP Braaten says Presidio is ideal for use on coastal, mountain, and lake-front homes. The combination of materials and construction, he says, creates a strong railing that doesn't obstruct that other all-important home accessory: the view.
