By Christopher Walker Washington, D.C., police last December charged Virginia contractor Walter Thomas Godbey with second-degree murder in the death of AOL executive Douglas Small. Small had hired Godbey to remodel his Washington home months earlier, the Washington Post reported.
According to a series of articles by various Post staff writers, police stated that the two met at Small's home on the morning of November 6, 2001, to discuss Small's complaints with Godbey's work on the renovation of his home. A violent struggle ensued, and Small ended up dying of multiple gunshot wounds. After being questioned by police, Godbey led authorities to Small's body, which had been left behind an industrial park in a suburb of Washington.
The residents of Small's neighborhood often refer contractors to their neighbors, but none of Small's friends in the area had ever heard of Godbey. According to the Post, the D.C. Consumer Regulatory Affairs Department said they could "find no license for a contractor named Godbey."
The Post also reported that friends of Small quoted him as once saying of Godbey, "I've got another contractor from hell."
The AFL-CIO developed this logo for its campaign to unionize temporary workers in the building trades, who the union says are often exploited by the agencies that employ them.
