By Nina Patel. The pint-sized clients of Woodenwings Builders, Palo Alto, Calif., receive special treatment during the remodel of their homes. Employees give each child a Woodenwings T-shirt and hardhat. The crew tells the kids they are junior members of the team.

"I haven't met a kid who didn't love building," says owner Laura Ferrell. The crew also uses the kit to teach the kids about safety -- the No. 1 rule is to always have an adult with them on a jobsite. Ferrell finds out the number and ages of the children when the company starts a job. She buys the hardhats at a toy store and adheres the company logo to them.
