Nothing is “impossible” unless you’ve never built a freestanding deck. If the ledger codes get too crazy, as suggested by Glenn Mathewson’s Structure column (May/June 2012), simply install posts and built-up beams (girders) along the houseline. We do it all the time around cantilevered bump-outs such as bay windows. You can even drop the beams down to get your “impossible” step down to the deck for your snow-country readers.
