A Maryland construction worker who was helping to build a backyard deck died Monday when a trench fell in on him, reports Baltimore CBS station WJZ ("Man, 25, Killed In Anne Arundel Co. Trench Collapse," by Derek Valcourt). "He was standing in an eight to nine foot hole when the walls just collapsed and buried him over his head," the station reports. 'Witnesses say they could hear his muffled screams for help from below the ground and there was little they could do to help him."

The Maryland Capital Gazette has this report: ("Neighboring construction crew rushed to help man buried alive in Severn," by Kate Yoon). "Rescue personnel from both Anne Arundel and Howard counties responded," the Gazette reports. "It took two vacuum trucks from the Department of Public Works and 45 emergency personnel about three-and-a half hours to remove the dirt and recover the body."
