Block Planer. Full-size 3 1/4-inch hand planers are meant to be guided with both hands for maximum control, but Festool has a compact model designed to be held in one hand, so the other hand can steady the work. The motorized equivalent of a block plane, the EHL 65E is 29/16 inches wide with a cut depth up to 5/32 inch — plenty of capacity for common jobs like planing door edges. The spiral cutter head has a solid carbide knife that cuts with a smooth shearing action. Chips can be ejected to either the right or left side.
