Using black walnut trees that had fallen during Hurricane Irene in 2011, Real Antique Woods milled up floor boards and stair tread stock, which had seasoned enough by mid-2014 to install. The job was finished in the fall, and Gary Horvath, owner of the Irving, N.J. company that specializes in reclaimed woods, submitted the project to the National Wood Flooring Association’s Wood Floor of the Year competition. The NWFA asks applicants to keep project images under wraps until after the member voting period ends (Feb. 28 this year). So on March 4, on her first day working with Real Antique Wood, Megan Curley posted the photo on the company's Facebook page.
The magazine of the NWFA, Hardwood Floors, reports that at the start of this St. Patrick's Day week, the photo has been viewed 1.95 million times, shared 22,330 times and “liked” 123,648 times.
