In an informal survey posted on this site asking which of the 2014 Remodeling Design Awards projects you favored, the Contemporary Bath With Nautical Touches, in the Bathroom Remodeling $25,000-$50,000 category by remodeler Nick Balding of Balding Brothers, in Wilmington, came out on top with 21% of the vote. A close second was the Far Pond project by Bates Masi + Architects in Sag Harbor, N.Y., and Breitenbach Builders, in Bridgehampton, N.Y., which was the Design Award judges’ pick for Best of the Year.
Reader comments about the nautical bath called out the uniqueness of the porthole medicine cabinets and the craftsmanship of the project. For the designer, key elements of the project involved improving the layout of the space and taking advantage of natural light. The whimsical nautical theme grew from the home’s location on the North Carolina coast.
For the Far Pond project, which won in the Whole-House Remodeling Over $500,000 category, readers commented that the work was “reminiscent of Frank Lloyd Wright's design in its simplicity and open design—it's just hard to take your eyes off of it,” and that it offers “truly spectacular indoor/outdoor living.”
