Bill Asdal first built this decision analysis tool for personal use, when he was considering building a house for himself and his family. He soon realized its value, and now makes it available to customers on the Asdal Builders Web site, www.asdalbuilders.com.

Why help a customer choose between building or buying a new house and remodeling their current one? Why not try to convince them to remodel? “Fruit baskets,” Asdal says wryly. He recently received one “half the size of my desk” from a couple that used this tool and ultimately realized they'd be happier in a new home than with the remodel they were struggling to plan.

Besides more grapefruit than he knows what to do with, less than a year later, Asdal got another reward: the no-bid contract for a $150,000 addition to the couple's new house.
