What began as a kitchen renovation turned into the project of a lifetime for Matt and Jeff Brewer at this rustic lakehouse in Casco, Maine. After discussing the project with the team at MR Brewer, the owner decided to forgo a simple remodel in favor of a rebuild within the home’s existing footprint.

With design help from local architect Joe Waltman, the Brewers reconfigured the interior layout and then got to work at the company’s millwork facility in Portland: Everything from the new timber frame to the cabinetry to the interior railings was hand-made by the firm.

The nearly two-year project resulted in a comfortable, creative home that’s truly one of a kind. The new great room, with a dramatic vaulted ceiling and two-sided stone fireplace at its center, serves as the heart of the home and a focal point where the woodworking, all in Eastern white pine, comes together.

Custom details, like stair treads inlaid with ebony and a master bath door with mahogany on one side and pine on the other, provide visual interest throughout the home.
