A bold and brightly colored office space designed to accommodate group and individual therapy for dyslexic students took the lead early on and kept it, winning with nearly 16% of the vote. The project, in which designers had to wrestle with and overcome a lack of natural light, won a Grand Award in the commercial under $250,000 category.

Kevin Alter, Ernesto Cragnolino, Jonathan Schwartz, and Jodi Jacobsen of Alterstudio Architects, in Austin, Texas, designed the 2,200-square-foot space. Mark Rehberg of Ranserve in Austin did the build.

The judges felt that the project was one of the strongest commercial entries they reviewed this year and praised its simple, artistic palette, which was created on a modest budget. “This project used a few materials in a compositionally edited way,” said one judge, Another said the project didn’t “have a single false note through presentation to execution.” --Stacey Freed is a senior editor at REMODELING.
