By Nina Patel. During the remodel of a 1960s ranch-style house in Texas, architect Dave Fazio used the entryway to introduce the contemporary rectangular theme that runs throughout the house. To meet the homeowners' desire to bring light into the house, Fazio created a wall of fixed glass panels set in a framework of maple.
To add weight to the dramatic entry, he chose a solid door. Fazio specified a 3-foot, 6-inch-by-8-foot solid-core door and then had a craftsman fasten strips of the maple wood flooring material to both sides. The craftsman also installed ball-bearing hinges to allow the massive door to open and close smoothly.
Crews repaired, sealed, and painted the existing sloped glass entry roof that protects the front door. The final effect is a strong statement that alludes to what visitors will see inside.
