Solutions
To get the space needed for storing wine and root vegetables, and for preparing pastry for the many parties these Washington, D.C., clients enjoy, designer Sherry Davis revamped an existing basement storage room. Conveniently located near the kitchen and adjacent to the mechanical room, it was the perfect location for a space that must be kept at 55º Fahrenheit.
The designer chose mahogany as the dominant wood for its durability in humid conditions as well as its upscale appearance. Copper and smoked mirrors add to the elegant look, and cork, sisal, and rough-sawn cedar give the space a “vintage vibe,” Davis says.
The 60-square-foot room has several unique details, such as wine crates used as drawer fronts, champagne corks for knobs, and sisal rope for handles.
A self-contained chiller unit vents to the adjacent mechanical room and maintains the room’s temperature. Hanan & Lerner Fine Woodworking gutted the room and sprayed closed-cell polyurethane foam in the walls and ceiling to provide a vapor barrier and the insulation needed to maintain the conditioned environment.
