Helmets to Hardhats (H2H) is a national program that helps servicemen and women find careers in the construction industry.
The congressionally funded program works with National Guard, Reserve, and transitioning active-duty military members on interactive Web-based education and registration.
In the two years that H2H has been operating, more than 15,000 candidates have registered. Many have accepted or are in the process of qualifying for careers as steelworkers, plumbers, cement masons, carpenters, and electricians.
The latest companies to partner with H2H are Bechtel, Disney, and the Tennessee Valley Authority. Hiring managers who use H2H receive prescreened candidates with strong track records. H2H also screens employers to make sure that they meet program criteria. Candidates do not need previous construction experience to benefit from the program. H2H Vital Stats:
- The estimated cost per candidate hired by a union through the H2H program is 20% of the current construction industry average hiring cost.
- More than 80% of all soldiers, airmen, sailors, and Marines are under the age of 34.
- Eligible H2H candidates can use their GI Bill benefits during an apprentice program.
