Honorable Mention, Additions: Enhanced Entry

1 MIN READ

Location: Bethesda, Md.
Contractor (entry canopy): Paul Jeffs, Acadia Contracting, Bethesda, Md.
Contractor (addition): Mark Badgley, Badgley Home Improvements, Dickerson, Md.
Designer: Ralph Cunningham, AIA, Cunningham|Quill Architects, Washington, D.C.

Challenge: To create a new entryway that softens the mass of concrete on this 1960s-era home and to design an addition that allows the homeowners to enjoy lush backyard views and gain privacy in their master bedroom.

Solution: An entry canopy creates a welcoming path as well as protection for two cars. The master bedroom, relocated to the back of the house and sheltered from neighboring views, seems to float over the back patio. Judges said: “It’s amazing what they did on this budget.” “The placement of beams hides the mediocre elevation, and there are nice details, such as the sun/shade elements on the rear elevation.”
