The design and construction team of this store remodel fulfilled the owner's vision to create a retail space that is appropriate for a historic village setting. The owner wanted to enhance the community and create a flexible design because the final use of the building had not been determined. The construction team from Danny Davis Construction demolished the existing concrete block structure and built a traditional 2,100-square-foot building on the original footprint. Architect Scott Wilson chose an open plan and partial loft to allow for a wide variety of uses. An inverted bay welcomes visitors and is fitted with an entry door made of reclaimed wood. The structure is clad in traditional poplar siding, and its floors and interior doors are made of reclaimed lumber, most of it heart pine. The judges admired this modest design for the palette of yellow and red, which enhances the building and fits the historic setting.
In addition to its current use as an antique store, the building is also used for community events. The back area under the loft doubles as a stage for live performances. A set of folding doors lead from the “stage” to a large covered porch on the rear of the building.
