For this luxury whole-home remodel in Malibu, Calif., the outdoor space was just as essential to the final result as the interiors. To facilitate the client’s love of entertaining, Doug Burdge of Burdge & Associates Architects created an open layout on the main floor and eliminated the barriers between the indoor living space and the outdoors.

Sliding glass doors span the length of the great room to connect with an elegant outdoor seating area. By using the same flooring and ceiling material for both spaces, Burdge created a seamless transition from indoors to out.

The spacious backyard also includes a zero-edge pool and spa, an oversized sunken fire pit, and an outdoor kitchen and bar, all surrounded by artificial grass to keep the large lawn low-maintenance and climate-conscious.

Beyond creating an outdoor oasis inspired by resort-style amenities, Burdge integrated the home’s stunning site throughout the home by keeping sightlines to the outdoors as clear as possible—the view through to the backyard is immediately visible from the home’s front entrance—and by using large expanses of glass to bring ample natural light into the space.
