“The little mud room that could,” said the judges of Peregrine Design/Build's multi-functioning and beautifully crafted space. Just 140 square feet, the mudroom was created for a family of four to organize and store sporting gear and winter apparel, to hide laundry facilities, and as a place for recharging personal electronic devices.
The homeowner didn't like the visibility of the laundry machines upon entering the home; she wanted them accessible but unseen. Designer Shawn Sweeney created open “lockers” for each family member along with shelving for shoes and drawers for miscellaneous items. The washer and dryer are hidden behind maple doors. With a 9-foot ceiling, sturdy benches were built so people could stand on them to reach the upper cabinets. The design is ideal for the family's active lifestyle and blends in perfectly with the home's contemporary aesthetic.
“They completely reorganized this space to solve a problem,” the judges said. “And it's charming.”
