Mosby Building Arts recently hired four people to bring specific skills — landscaping, masonry, and siding — to its construction team. Three are former business owners themselves, opting to work for another company due to the tough economy. When these four became available, president Scott Mosby decided to incorporate their skills into his company.

Mosby says the new hires (identified in the photo) are a valuable investment for his Kirkwood, Miss., business because by bringing their skills in-house the company can better control both the costs and the quality of the siding, masonry, and landscaping aspects of its jobs. “We make promises to our clients and they expect us to come through,” Mosby says.

Skilled Diagnosis

These new employees will also help Mosby Building Arts with consultations. The company charges $325 for a review of house conditions and chronic problems, including diagnosing leaks — many of which involve foundations, landscaping, and incorrect siding installation. The company brings in these new employees as needed to help diagnose specific problems.

Entrepreneur to Employee Shift

Mosby says that it’s often difficult for former entrepreneurs to relinquish control, noting that it takes about a year for them to adjust to Mosby’s company culture. However, he adds, hiring someone fresh “from the outside” can mean the introduction of new, and better, ideas to the company.

To help facilitate communication at Mosby Building Arts, all new employees take the DISC personality assessment.
