Designer Daniel Trempe offers three levels of service so his clients can tailor his offerings. The owner of Daniel's Kitchen Design ( www.danielskitchendesign.com) in Anaheim, Calif., says his design services are more affordable than those offered by full-service firms and Home Depot services, including the company's Expo Design Center. Those options, he says, "are high end. The average client can't invest $750 to $1,000 for a design."

His system of levels addresses middle-class customers who have a variety of design needs. Level one starts at $295. The prices for levels two and three increase as the services increase.

Once the homeowner pays the fee, the designs belong to them. The clients are free to choose their own contractor, though Trempe offers suggestions. "I will make appliance recommendations," he says. "I may recommend specific brands based on what they are looking for or just a store where they can pick out what they want."
