Larry Taff of Madison, Wis., and Monarcha Marcet of Orlando, Fla., won Home for Life Awards from the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) Remodelers for a pair of projects that exemplified excellence in aging-in-place and universal design principles, the association announced today.
Taff's firm, TZ of Madison general contractors, won in the Major Space remodel category while Marcet, of Adventure in Building Inc., was honored in the Single Space division.
Taff created a single-level addition to a split-level home that added wheelchair access to a bath, living space, kitchen and the outdoors. The result helped bring a family member back from a nursing home. A screened porch and deck allowed the home owners to continue gardening, and a bathroom with a roll-in European style shower, pocket door and roll-in sink complemented the living space on the same level.
Marcet's design enables meals to be created and enjoyed by all members of a multigenerational household, including an adult child with a wheelchair. "In addition to opening the kitchen floor plan and installing strategic lighting and easy maintenance finishes, the sink and cooktop were installed on lifts," NAHB said in an announcement. "Best of all, since the cooktop and sink raise and lower independently, the whole family can now work in the kitchen at the same time."
NAHB Remodelers presented the prizes in Chicago on Oct. 17 at an awards dinner during the Remodeling Show.
