Mike Guertin has been gracing the stage of JLC Live for some two decades, but his Building Clinic never gets old.
Listening to Mike teach is a little like listening to a David Wilcox classic - the music goes down easy, like a favorite meal or a cold beverage on a hot day, and the lyrics'll make you smile, though the message carries a serious note if you listen closely. More than anything you're struck by the words of a humble man. There are scores of folks out there who care deeply about the building trades, but few who have done as much to advance the trades as Mike has through his work as an author and as an instructor, on and off the jobsite.
This year, Mike returns to JLC Live to teach his Roofer's Workshop, which is designed to help alleviate the worst kind of call a contractor can get: "My new roof leaks." Mike applies his practical advice and will demonstrate all his work for you to savor and critique. That's what makes the Building Clinics so valuable! They're as much a discussion among peers as a presentation from an expert; they are a place to both learn and share. You'll never be talked down to, and if you have something to contribute, your voice will be welcomed.
To give you a taste of some of Mike's thinking about roofing, here are some of the articles on the topic he's contributed to JLC over the years. Of course, reading these are never as good as hearing and seeing it done ... Live!
Ice Dam Membrane at Eaves - Mike clarifies the code requirements for those building in cold country.
Top Down Roofing - This one's no less than radical for most roofers. But it's hard to argue with the efficiency when you can protect the new roof from foot traffic and make setting and removing staging easier.
Fixing a Dripping Gutter - This problem is more common than you'd think.

Finding the Source of a Roof Leak - Some roof leaks are notorious. Here's one the builder was unable to fix and required a bit of sleuthing from Mike to figure out.
Roof Ventilation for Coastal Homes - Faced with driving rain that leaks through attic vents, plus uncompromising codes, Mike Guertin relies on his ingenuity
