Why Can't I Find a
Good Contractor?
I just got off the phone with a
journalist, who called to ask me
(1) why so many people have awful
experiences with building and
remodeling contractors and (2) what I
felt should be done to remedy this
problem. She's writing an article for
the Boston Globe Sunday Magazine,
which is seen by over 800,000 people
each week. She thinks the story will
be widely read and appreciated
because "nearly everyone I talk to has
a horror story of some kind with a
contractor."
She was prompted to write the
article, she said, by a bad experience
she had (and is still having) with a
kitchen addition. Among other
