A carpenter at DeCiantis Construction had his tools stolen from his truck while it was parked in his driveway. His vehicle insurance didn't cover the loss because he had not specified the tools in his policy. His coworkers came to the rescue, donating their tool allowances to help him replace what was stolen.
Owner John DeCiantis had heard that a few of the carpenters wanted to donate their $50-per-month tool allowance through the end of 2004. DeCiantis loved the idea and offered to match the amount they raised. DeCiantis matched the staff's $900 for a total of $1,800.
Tools can take years to collect and are very personal, but the carpenter was able to replace quite a few with the money. DeCiantis says the time the company spends developing team-work and company culture has paid off. “It's at times like this I am proud to be the owner of a remodeling company,” DeCiantis says.
