This 418-square-foot conference room replaced an existing screened porch on a 1920s-era two-story stone structure. The client, a design services firm, wanted a new space that would fit into the surroundings, accommodate the growing business, and reflect the firm's design principles.
The judges thought this wood, stone, copper, and glass addition was a “wonderful solution. It sits elegantly on the property and creates a very inviting space that would be successful for any business — especially the construction business.”
Great care was taken in the craftsmanship to create a structure that befits Charlottesville's history. The judges noted the interior carpentry, columns, detailing, thick walls, and barrel-vaulted ceiling. “It [all] speaks volumes to their craft.”
The addition, says the architect, meets the client's desire for a larger, naturally illuminated, and conveniently located conference room that takes advantage of the existing garden and blends in with the existing structure's stone walls and residential form.
