It seemed that after every jobsite visit, some piece of information crucial to accurate, timely estimating was, inevitably, forgotten. So Eric Bushey and Mike Stauffer, estimators at Excel Interior Concepts and Construction in Lemoyne, Pa., created this checklist for room additions to ensure that site visits are more efficient and effective.

“The Addition Checklist helps us document a lot of a building's existing conditions that might otherwise have been overlooked or forgotten,” Bushey says. The checklist provides an organized, methodical approach to determining the characteristics of the houses and to uncovering some of the concealed structural and mechanical elements. “For remodelers, having a handle on the hidden components can sometimes be the difference between turning a profit or losing your shirt,” Bushey says.
