This is an interesting setup for mechanics tools. Groups of tools (Stackable Sets) are sold in modular plastic storage cases that stack and clip one to another. The tools themselves rest in removable trays that can be lifted from the cases and placed in the drawer of a rolling mechanics tool box. This allows the same group of tools to be stored and used in the shop and then removed as a group, placed in a case, and taken elsewhere to perform specific jobs. Instead of hauling a heavy box of tools, take only the ones you need: a metric socket set, SAE socket set, combination wrench set, and the like.

The top of the case is translucent so you can tell by looking what is inside—though it might be hard tell the difference between SAE and metric tools of the same kind. Though when stacked, you can only see through the top of the uppermost one. I first saw these tools at last year’s STAFDA show and at the time the front of the case wasn’t labeled. I must not have been the only one who complained because the next time I saw them (at a recent media event held at DeWalt’s assembly plant in Charlotte, NC) the cases were labeled on front so you can tell what’s inside.

Packaging tools in this manner is a smart move on the part of DeWalt. It provides a secure way to display tools at the point of sale and the purchaser ends up with a handy case.

The tools contained in the cases are newly designed. Fabricated from vanadium chrome steel, they feel solid and well made. The new 72-tooth ratchet is said to have three times the life span of standard ratchets—and with its 5-degree arc swing and slim head design it promises to be maneuverable in tight quarters. The sockets are laser etched for easy identification and have knurled rings to reduce slippage during hand tightening applications.

The combination wrenches are long for greater reach and leverage, and have an anti-slip feature consisting of raised ridges and indented grooves where they grasp nuts and bolts. According to DeWalt this allows them to deliver greater torque and 400 percent more gripping power. Knuckle clearance.is provided by a 15-degree offset at the box end.
