In this historic 1860s house, as with many historic houses in Charleston, the only place to fit a powder room was under the stairs. But it was a tight fit -- the space measured 32 by 63 inches. To make it work, designer Duval Acker, co-owner of Kitchens by Design in Mt. Pleasant, S.C., had her Corian fabricator craft a sink to fit snugly in a corner.
Fabricator Buddy Wilkes visited the jobsite to make a template of the sink. Though Acker had never seen it done before, she wanted Wilkes to set glass tiles in the Corian to give the wall-hung lavatory some pizzazz. Wilkes fitted the 3/4-inch tiles in a border around the perimeter. The homeowner used the remaining tile to commission a matching frame for the corner medicine cabinet.
